Program Syllabus
SmartBody SmartMind™ (SBSM) is a one-of-a-kind group online program that is for dedicated individuals who want profound healing and change that can last a lifetime, and can also benefit future generations.
To learn, grow, heal, and succeed at the deepest level possible means working at the deepest level: the nervous system.
Thousands of people from over 60 countries have ‘walked’ the virtual hallways of SBSM, and they are making remarkable progress in how they live, heal, parent, work, connect, love, and so much more.
Here’s what you’ll learn:
SmartBody SmartMind™ weaves together learning and practices from multiple revolutionary approaches.
Somatic Practice (the work of Kathy Kain), Somatic Experiencing (the work of Peter Levine), neurosequential healing (as written about by Norman Doidge), The Polyvagal Theory (as presented and discovered by Stephen Porges), and Feldenkraisian Learning (the work of Moshé Feldenkrais).
Neuroplastic Healing Sequencing
Most people try to jump into healing at an advanced level without first doing the foundational work.
Imagine trying to paint a house or put furniture in it before a blueprint has been created or the foundation has been laid. Impossible, right?
Growing more nervous system regulation and capacity, which gives us the space to heal and release old traumas, as well as restore health back to the human body, requires strong and resilient foundations to be put in place first.
We must start with the ‘blueprint’ first (this is what gives us the foundation).
The ‘blueprint’ of SmartBody SmartMind™ focuses on a term coined by Irene Lyon called, Neuroplastic Healing Sequencing, which means to grow somatic and nervous system capacity by becoming more skilled at understanding and navigating our somatic experiences and our relationship to the environment, first.
This “skill building” is what the comprehensive education and practical Neurosensory Exercises teach you.
36 Neurosensory Exercises
During the 12-week period that we are in session, you’ll receive practical neurosensory exercises that tap into multiple layers of your somatic (body) experience and how it all connects to the environment.
The ‘exercises’ are designed to improve sensory and intentional awareness by working with a whole host of the body’s systems.
For example, you’ll learn how to work with the visceral systems like the kidneys and adrenals, the gut-brain connections (that’s where the vagus nerve comes in!), as well as bring more capacity to breath and whole body movement.
Nervous system basics such as orienting, connecting to the environment, and learning how to better follow biological impulse will be part of all exercises from start to end.
More advanced lessons will teach you how to learn again with ease and curiosity by bringing greater awareness to habitual body tensions and behaviours, so one can re-route (rewire) better patterns of thinking, moving, and being.
These revolutionary neurosensory exercises work in tandem with the theory being taught.
The goal? To grow internal somatic capacity, regulate the autonomic and sensory-motor nervous systems, and become your own medicine.
These neurosensory exercises are audio tracks that range in length from the quick 10 minute reset exercises to lengthier, more relaxing and rewiring 30-40 minute sessions. There’s a good blend for everyone.
These practices have been crafted and recorded by Irene Lyon, and they blend her expertise in the somatic healing arts of Somatic Experiencing, Somatic Practice and Feldenkraisian learning.
The Biology of Stress Video Training Series
In order to transform the way your body handles stress, processes old traumas, and grows greater amounts of vital lifeforce energy so you no longer have to store up stress or trapped trauma, you need to understand how the biology works.
This signature video training series contains five master class video trainings that have completely revolutionized how our members witness their lives, the lives of those around them (family, friends, co-workers), as well as how they see the world and passerby around them.
It can be empowering to finally understand how and why our biology drives behaviour.
Training Topics Include:
1. Autonomic Nervous System 101
Video 1 is a comprehensive overview of the autonomic nervous system and all its branches, how our stress response works when in good regulation (and in dysregulation), and the importance of social engagement.
2. What Animals In The Wild Do That We Don’t Do
Video 2 brings you on an African safari adventure and introduces the ‘freeze’ and immobility response, why it is essential, but also why it can get us humans into nervous system trouble when left on too long.
3. Vagus Nerve 101
Video 3 is all about the wandering cranial nerve that is the vagus nerve, and how it creates communication pathways up and down and throughout our entire human experience. There is nuance and complexity with what some call vagal ‘tone’ and this training goes right to the heart (literally) of what is known as the Polyvagal Theory.
4. How Survival Stress Shows Up In The Body
Video 4 explores the topics of co-regulation and how we were originally ‘wired’ as infants, what we want to happen for optimal self-regulation and health, and what happens when it doesn’t go as nature intended it. This training dives into the “cost” of being stuck in a constant state of survival stress and how it can manifest in different ways.
5. Healing Our Human Predicament
Video 5 dives into the different kinds of memories – procedural and declarative; or implicit and explicit – that humans have, the ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ ways to tackle stressful events, and why working with and healing early and developmental trauma is more about restoring nervous system regulation and less about “releasing” trauma.
Here’s how you’ll get the information
10 Training Modules
Each module (or “lab,” as we like to call them) gives you a blend of education and practical exercises. Video trainings, readings, plus our signature audio ‘neurosensory’ exercises make up each module, and will start you off on your nervous system apprenticeship.
2 Integration/Rest Weeks
A note about the program content and pacing: this work is meant to be done slowly and over a long period of time, which is why everyone who joins becomes an alumni and receives lifetime access for as long as the program is offered in its current form (see SBSM program terms for more details).
Professional Support Team
I’m a huge believer in asking for help and getting support.
In the private members’ dashboard, you’re able to connect with our professional support team and ask questions about your learning experience when we are in the live session of SmartBody SmartMind™

Our professional experts have diverse backgrounds in the somatic, counselling, and mind-body healing arts. All are trained in a variety of somatic-based trauma healing modalities such as Somatic Experiencing and Somatic Practice. Our private forums are a place for participants to connect, support, and learn from each other. These forums are text-based, therefore the ability to read and write in the English language is essential.
9 Training Calls
Consider these calls your ‘lecture’ for the week! During these training calls, you’ll be introduced to new nervous system concepts and fundamental theory for healing trauma and restoring regulation back to your nervous system. These Training Calls may be conducted live or delivered through pre-recorded video by Irene or other trained team members. All calls (recorded or pre-recorded) are put in the member area within 24-48 hours following the call for easy access.
Occasionally, live calls may be rescheduled.
Curated Q&A Calls
Our curated Q&A calls are led by Seth Lyon (Irene’s colleague and husband) and occasionally, other members of Team Lyon. They are an opportunity to deepen your learning by hearing specific answers related to SmartBody SmartMind™ participants’ questions. These calls are curated so that we can provide a variety of insight and expertise that will best serve our entire membership.
Occasionally, live calls may be rescheduled.
Movement Lessons with Special Guest Teacher Elia Mrak
(Qigong, Tai Chi, and House Dance)
My colleague and co-teacher Elia Mrak will be providing a handful of movement lessons throughout the 12-week session, to help spark connections between yourself and the space around you. These lessons will be experiential, and will involve movements that can be made adaptive to your abilities.
