This section addresses the following questions:

  • Can kidneys really move/drop? I can’t find any literature online about this, and want to learn more. Do you have any resources?
  • When Irene says imagine the kidneys dropping, does she mean dropping down towards the floor/my hand, or moving lower down towards my pelvis?
  • Is it normal for one kidney to drop, but not the other?

Yes, indeed, the kidneys can change their position, and no, you will not be able to find any literature online about it. Only people who have studied with Kathy Kain, worked with one of her practitioners, or taken SmartBody SmartMind know about this.

We imagine them dropping, but what happens more literally is they soften, as does the fascia that wraps them, and yet this can enable a literal change in position as they settle closer to the surface of the back, and down towards the pelvis, and that’s the movement you want to imagine — a diagonal descent. If it works better for you to just imagine them softening, then that’s fine too.

It’s not uncommon at all for one to settle more easily than the other. If this is the case that’s fine — don’t berate the more stubborn kidney! 🙂 Just keep bringing attention and care, eventually it will get the memo.
